What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to help Canadian residents without dental coverage, specifically those with a household income of less than $90,000 annually. It’s important to note that the CDCP is a government dental benefit, not a free dental service.

The program is aimed at Canadians who don’t have existing dental coverage. It is not meant to replace benefits provided through employers, schools, or private plans, but it can work alongside other government programs. The CDCP is overseen by Health Canada and administered by Sun Life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most common FAQs about program eligibility and access

You can verify your eligibility by visiting the Health Canada website.

The program is currently available to Canadian residents over 65, those under 18, and adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. All other residents will become eligible in 2025.

To apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you’ll need to submit your application through Health Canada. Once your application is processed, Sun Life will send you a welcome package within three months. This package will include important details about your coverage, the effective date of your benefits, and your membership card. At Ultima Dental, we’re here to help you navigate the process and answer any questions you may have about using your CDCP benefits for your dental care.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) helps cover part of your dental costs, but it does not provide free dental care. You may need to pay for any remaining expenses not covered by the plan.

Co-payments are required based on your adjusted annual family net income:

  • No co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income under $70,000.
  • A 40% co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income between $70,000 and $79,999.
  • A 60% co-payment for those with an adjusted annual family net income between $80,000 and $89,999.

At Ultima Dental, we encourage you to discuss the costs of your treatment and any potential out-of-pocket expenses with us when booking your appointment. We’ll help you understand what is covered by the CDCP and assist with any financial questions you may have.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) offers coverage for a wide range of dental services, helping to maintain and improve your oral health. At Ultima Dental, we want to ensure you understand what’s covered under the plan, including:

Preventive care such as cleanings (scaling), sealants, and fluoride treatments

  • Diagnostic services like exams and x-rays
  • Restorative treatments, including fillings
  • Endodontic procedures, such as root canal therapy
  • Prosthodontic services, including complete and partial removable dentures
  • Periodontal care, including deep scaling
  • Oral surgery services, like extractions
Some treatments under the CDCP will require preauthorization. This means certain services, based on the recommendation of your oral health provider, need prior approval to confirm they will be covered.
