Convenient Access from Southwood
Southwood families can be in the chair at Ultima Dental Wellness after a drive of roughly 7 minutes, most of it straight up Macleod Trail. Our office is in Kingsland, in southwest Calgary, and three dentists share the care of children, teens and adults. As a dentist near Southwood with orthodontics, wisdom teeth removal and family checkups under one roof, we keep the number of offices your family has to visit down to one.
From Southwood Library at 924 Southland Dr SW, pull out to Elbow Dr SW and turn onto Southland Dr SW heading east. At Macleod Trail, go north and continue until 71 Ave SW, where a left turn brings you to the office. Expect about 4.1 km and roughly 7 minutes behind the wheel, a little more when Macleod Trail fills up at rush hour.
The address is 506 71 Ave SW #202, and free parking is available on arrival. Open the office in Google Maps to save the route. Transit riders can board the Red Line at Southland or Anderson station, both on Southwood's Macleod Trail edge, and ride north to Chinook station, about 1.0 km from the office. We also welcome patients from Haysboro and Pump Hill.
Where Southwood Families Fit In
Southwood was established in 1960, and most of its homes date from the 1960s and 1970s. About half are single-detached houses, with row houses, low-rise apartments and semi-detached homes filling in the rest. Elbow Drive runs through the middle, and the community stretches from the Southland Drive area down to Anderson Road.
Schools anchor daily life here. Ethel M. Johnson School and Harold Panabaker School both sit on Sackville Dr SW, and St. Stephen School is on Elbow Drive. With elementary and junior high students throughout the community, appointments often have to fit around the school timetable.
Ultima started more than thirty years ago as a solo family practice, and caring for whole families is still the center of what it does. Parents can book their own cleaning alongside the kids' checkups, and the same dentists can follow a child from first visit to the end of orthodontic treatment.
The weekly schedule helps. The office opens at 7:00 AM on Thursdays and stays open until 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mondays run 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Fridays 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Families new to the practice can start with a free meet and greet, a no-pressure way for children to see the office and for parents to ask questions. The team speaks multiple languages, including English, French, Korean and Spanish, which helps when grandparents or relatives come along to appointments.
Junior High, Braces and Wisdom Teeth: Southwood's Dental To-Do List
Many orthodontic decisions land in the junior high years. Most adult teeth are in by then, and crowding, overbites and crossbites become easier to judge. Starting treatment at the right moment can make it shorter and simpler.
Ultima offers several paths in-house. Younger children may begin with Myobrace, an appliance-based approach to guiding growth. Teens can choose between Invisalign clear aligners and Insignia braces, and the practice's airway-centered orthodontics, led by Dr. Yoo's advanced training, looks at breathing and jaw development alongside straight teeth.
Wisdom teeth are the next milestone. They usually try to erupt from the late teens onward, and some come in without trouble while others are crowded or stuck below the gum. Wisdom teeth extractions are done in the same office, with CBCT 3D imaging used to plan the more complex ones.
Adults in Southwood have their own list. Older fillings from decades past, early gum disease and the odd cracked tooth are common in a community built in the 1960s and 1970s. Regular hygiene visits catch these early.
Younger children need a different kind of attention. Cavities in baby teeth are still worth treating, because those teeth hold space for the adult teeth behind them. Gentle cleanings, early bite checks and practical advice on snacks and brushing set up good habits long before the orthodontic years arrive.

Checkups and hygiene visits for every member of a Southwood household. Prevention is the first step in every plan, from a child's first visit to a grandparent's maintenance cleaning.
Tooth Extractions
Simple and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth, are part of a comprehensive range of in-house surgical procedures. Teens stay with dentists they already know.

Meet Your Calgary Dental Team
Dr. Amy Yoo graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2004 and guides the practice's airway-centered orthodontics. Dr. Richard Krim, who leads the practice, earned his DDS at the University of Alberta in 2001 and has a special interest in orthodontics and implants.
Insurance, CDCP & Financing
Orthodontic treatment is a bigger commitment, so the office offers pre-treatment estimates and payment plans arranged ahead of time with our Treatment Coordinator. Direct insurance billing works with private, employee and government coverage, and iFinance financing is another option.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Ultima Dental Wellness from Southwood, and how do I get there?
Southwood Library is about 4.1 km from the office, roughly a 7-minute drive. Head east on Southland Dr SW, turn north on Macleod Trail and turn left onto 71 Ave SW. Families looking for a dentist near Southwood will find the office at 506 71 Ave SW #202, with free parking.
Do wisdom teeth always need to come out?
No. Wisdom teeth that grow in fully, sit in a healthy position and can be cleaned well may be kept. Removal is usually recommended when they are impacted, partly erupted, crowding other teeth or causing pain, infection or decay. An exam with x-rays, and 3D imaging when needed, shows which situation applies to you or your teen.
How can I protect my kids' teeth from sports drinks and snacks?
Limit how often, not just how much. Sugary and acidic drinks do the most harm when sipped throughout the day, so offer water between meals and keep sports drinks for long, intense activity. Choose snacks like cheese, vegetables or nuts, and have kids rinse with water afterward. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste adds protection.
How should my teen care for their mouth after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Rest and protect the blood clot for the first few days. Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding, avoid straws, spitting and smoking, and stick to soft, cool foods. After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water. Call the office if pain, swelling or bleeding gets worse instead of better.
Does my teen need to wear a retainer after braces or aligners?
Yes. Teeth naturally tend to drift back toward their old positions after orthodontic treatment, especially in the first months. A retainer holds them in their new place while the surrounding bone and gums settle. Your dentist will explain how often to wear it, and following that schedule protects the time and money already invested.
